About Tattapani

Tattapani, Himachal Pradesh – Hot Springs of Healing and Heritage

Tattapani—literally meaning “hot water”—is a scenic village in Himachal Pradesh, located on the banks of the Sutlej River, about 50 km from Shimla. It is renowned for its natural sulphur-rich hot springs, which have been revered for centuries for their healing, spiritual, and cultural significance.

Local folklore attributes the hot springs to divine acts—either Lord Krishna, who is said to have squeezed hot water from a wet towel, or Maharishi Jamadagni, who blessed the land.

The springs are considered sacred, drawing pilgrims year-round, especially during Magh Sankranti, when ritual bathing is believed to purify the body and soul.

Besides the Hot springs, this little town is also very popular for a Hindu ritual of Tula Daan where a person is weighed against valuable items (like grains, fruits, sweets, or even gold/silver) and these items are then offered as charity (Daan) to the needy or a deity. It's performed to mark significant life events, birthdays, or during auspicious times, symbolizing the weighing of one's life/sins against blessings
