Natural Hot Spring Pools

Nestled in the serene valley of Tattapani, just 49 km from Shimla, lie the only natural hot spring pools of the region — rich in minerals and renowned for their therapeutic powers. With water temperatures naturally ranging between 40°C to 47°C, these springs are a gift of nature, formed deep beneath the earth’s surface through geothermal activity.

A Journey Through Nature and History

The Satluj River, one of the longest rivers of India, begins its journey from Lake Rakshastal near Mount Kailash in Tibet and flows for about 1,450 kilometers through Tibet, India, and Pakistan. This ancient river has been a witness to history, culture, and spirituality for thousands of years. On its banks lies Tattapani, a sacred place believed to be associated with the Saptrishi and Maharishi Jamdagni. According to legend, during the Treta Yuga, Maharishi Jamdagni performed deep tapasya and meditation here, and by his divine grace, natural sulfur hot springs emerged from the earth. Since then, people from across the world have been visiting Tattapani to take a holy bath and experience the healing power of these springs.

The hot springs, with a natural temperature of around 45 degrees Celsius, are rich in 37 minerals and are known for their therapeutic benefits. They are said to relieve stress, improve skin health, and cure various ailments. For centuries, the springs stood as a symbol of nature’s blessing and spiritual purity. However, in 2015, the Government of India, through the National Thermal Power Corporation, built the Kol Dam on the Satluj River. With the construction of this massive project, the ancient hot springs of Tattapani were submerged under water.

But the story did not end there. Before the ancient springs disappeared forever, an entrepreneur, Mr. Prem Raina, took the initiative to preserve the legacy of Tattapani. He reopened the same stream of hot water, maintaining its natural warmth and mineral composition. Additionally, another hot spring was discovered 150 meters below the surface, which is now open for public use. Today, visitors enjoy the healing waters of these springs while overlooking the calm lake that the Satluj has now become after the construction of the dam.

Thus, the story of Tattapani is not only about a river or a hot spring—it is a story of nature, faith, resilience, and renewal. From the meditation of Maharishi Jamdagni in ancient times to the modern efforts of preservation, Tattapani continues to remain a place where spirituality meets natural therapy, attracting visitors from across the globe.
